Cracked or broken glass

It's important to fix the problem as quickly as you can if the window is damaged or has broken glass. If you don't address the crack, it may become worse and create airflow issues in your house. A professional can help if you're not confident in your ability to repair the crack on your own.

There are several methods to repair your window based on the severity of the crack. The easiest option is to cover the crack with clear tape. This will shield your family from being damaged by glass shards but still allowing sunlight and air to flow through. You can take it one step further and use epoxy. This is more labor intensive, however, it can produce the most attractive end product.

First, you'll want to clean the area around the crack. Dip a cotton rag into a solution of water and soap and then gently scrub the cracked area. After the window has dried, apply the epoxy in accordance with the directions on the packaging. After the epoxy has set, use a putty blade to remove any excess and smooth the surface.

Stress cracks are the most common type of crack in a window replacement glass in a home. They typically begin near the edges of the glass and extend throughout the pane. These are usually caused by temperature changes within your home and they can get worse over time.

For double-pane windows, you'll need to replace the entire window if one pane breaks. These windows are made of two parts which work as one unit. This is not like regular windows that can be replaced by an entirely new frame.

To replace a pane of glass in a double-pane windows, you'll need to remove the glazing clips or points that hold the window replacement in place. If you're replacing a damaged pane, ensure you keep track of the pieces to be able to replace them in the future. For other types of windows it is necessary to scrape off the old putty, and then apply it again to the new window.

Stained Glass

The delicate little pieces of glass that compose stained glass windows are brittle and fragile. A rough treatment, a collision with hard objects, or a sudden change in temperature can crack and break the glass.

The positive side is that even in the event that the glass is broken, it can be repairable and free from the expense of replacement and removal of the panel. Stained glass experts can employ different methods to repair the damage such as re-leading or re-foiling, painting or platina and putting in new glass.

Replacing or repairing cracked stained glass can be a challenge and time-consuming. It is important to hire an expert who is familiar with the various repair techniques and is able to select the most effective one for your project. Each repair technique has different strengths, reversibility, as well as visual effects. Therefore, each should be assessed separately.

Re-leading is a popular method of repairing cracked lead glass. A skilled artisan will carefully bend the soft ductile lead, known as came, back into shape to accommodate the crack. After the piece has been bent, it can be put in place with solder and cement is used to secure it. After the new cement has cured, the crack can then be cleaned, polished and sealed.

Another method to repair cracked leaded glass is by spotting the crack and then re-leading the piece of glass. This is a labor-intensive and expensive process, but it is effective. First the cracked piece of glass is removed, cleaned and sanded down to smooth the surface. Then a lead knife or pincers are used to remove the lead and wash off any oxidation or mold growth. After the lead has been removed the sanded surface of the glass is cleaned and the new lead is cut to neatly adjoin the damaged area and soldered in place.

An easier option to fix stained glass that is sagging is to add reinforcing bars to the window. They are rebar-like support structures that are placed along the inside side of lead and join to the frame to stop it from sagging. The bars are usually hidden behind decorative foiling, which makes them unnoticeable.

The term "muntin" is a common term used by those who are familiar with windows. These wood strips that are vertical separate the panes of traditional multi-paned windows. Typically, they are employed in older homes to maintain an authentic look and are often required by city ordinances for building or renovating a historic district. However, many new replacement windows employ muntins for aesthetics only instead of adding strength and stability to the sash. However, they can get damaged and if they're broken or rotting it is possible to replace them with new pieces.

The majority of window manufacturers today don't distinguish between mullions and muntins because both serve the same purpose. They are frequently used interchangeably. However, if you're replacing your windows, you must be aware of the distinction between them so that you and your contractor are on the same page when discussing the details of your project.

A mullion is the single vertical prop that holds glass panes together in a multi-pane arrangement. This was an essential feature prior to the advent of glass manufacturing technology as larger pieces were almost impossible to make. Modern windows do not require mullions as the frames are constructed of two glass units that are glued to one another. However, certain older kinds of windows have mullions to provide support, and RepairMyWindowsAndDoors they are often used to enhance the appearance of windows.

If your mullions have signs of age, you can easily fix them by applying a drop or two of silicone on both sides of the muntin. Then, press it back into the frame. If you are replacing a horizontal muntin you may need to employ a coping saw to cut away the old one and then form the ends by using a file so that it fits into the mortise of another horizontal muntin. Otherwise, RepairMyWindowsAndDoors simply purchase another muntin that's slightly different than the original and it will be perfectly matched.

Some IGUs have real muntins and mullions which are integrated into the unit to provide effect only. If you are having issues with these components it's likely that it's time to replace your window.

Frame

You don't want ruining the appearance of your frame by painting it however if you need to touch it up you can use a sanding sponge and a fine grit to remove any paint or stains. Use a dry rag to wash it again. Pay special attention to the corners around the mitered joints. If these have popped open a little, try to close them with a gentle touch, and then apply some wood glue to hold them back together. You can also use vinegar to dissolve the old glue in these areas, but you might need to test it on one or two corners before applying it all over.

If the corners are loose and a concern, you can usually disassemble the entire frame to reach them and then follow the steps 3-8 to resolve the issue. If the separation is small and only on one side, it might be possible to let the joint open a bit by wriggling.

If the corners have shattered completely apart, you will need needle-nose pliers or a flat surface a small clamp, and wood glue. If only the top and bottom corners are broken it is common to use finishing nails (those are nails that are thin and are similar in size to the head) into the corner of the frame, to keep it securely in place after the glue has dried. Be careful not to put the nails too near the corner, or you could weaken it. You can also strengthen the corner with carpenter's adhesive and an hammer or wood putty.
